Berk's Drug
Store

Pennington Avenue
Albert
Berkelhammer, R. Dr.
Dad opened the store in 1942.It was cheap and he didn't want to
take money from his sisters and yes the plant was great. Everyone loved him. He
would open 9-5. Come upstairs for an hour, eat and nap and reopen at 6 til 9.
Closed on Sundays. Always took off for all the high holidays.
No other pharmacies nearby.
When Korvettes opened that was some competition. Zabinsky, Bloomberg,
Zimskind That's who I remember. Sold the store when I was finished with
Douglass and started working for other pharmacies.

Street
My father owned and operated Siegle Brothers, a wholesale house
(not a stationary store) late of 28 North Stockton Street right next to Rossi
Bakery, smell and all. The business going way back was on Hanover Street in my early
days operated by my grandfather Sam Siegle. Dad and his brother Sydney Siegle
(father of Phil Siegle) ran it until Syd's death in 1868. Dad ran it solely
until his passing in 1972. My mother Ruth, still alive and kicking in Greenwood
House ran it until the doors closed in 1986 or so. It's local competitors were
Harold Anshen and Luis Kuperschmidt. Trenton Tobacco was also in the mix.
I lived all my
Trenton days in West Trenton, first Sanhican Drive and then to Cadwalader
Drive. Each day was a prized possession. I have virtually no history with South
Trenton. At least while I was around, both parental grandparents lives on West
State Street till the die they died.
We are members
of Adath Israel until my grandfather, a pillar in the synagogue, passed
in 1957. We then changed to Har Sanai.
I knew David and
Howard Finkle quite well and Lester was my Dad's doctor. I presume you were related
to them? [Yes. Great people]

The
Trenton Bath House is a pivotal, influential design by
the architect Louis Kahn, with the help of his associate,
renowned architect Anne Tyng,[2] at 999 Lower Ferry
Road, Ewing Township, Mercer County, New
Jersey, United States. It was listed in the National Register of
Historic Places in 1984.
Exterior
A corner of the bath house
It is neither in Trenton,
New Jersey, nor is it a bath house, but the so-called "Trenton Bath
House" commands attention from architectural historians around the world.
Designed as part of a larger plan (never executed) for the Jewish
Community Center of the Delaware Valley, the "bath house" opened in
1955 and served as the entrance and changing area for patrons of an outdoor
swimming pool.
From a design perspective, the bath house actually appears as a simple cruciform—four square concrete block rooms or areas, surrounding an open atrium. Each of the rooms is topped by a
simple, wooden rectangular pyramid. At the corner of each room there is a
large, open rectangular column that supports the roof. However, closer
inspection reveals that in addition to the pure design elegance, Kahn also
clarified his thinking about the utilitarian purposes of the various spaces,
and it was in this building that he first articulated his notion of spaces
serving and spaces served.
Kahn often spoke of this project as a turning point in his design
philosophy, "From this came a generative force which is recognizable in
every building which I have done since."
On August 10, 2006, Mercer County and Ewing Township purchased the bath
house from the Jewish Community Center for $8.1 million, using funds from the
Open Space Preservation Trust Fund. This action ensures that the historic
integrity of the bath house will be protected. Ewing plans to use the main
J.C.C. building as a senior citizens center. The J.C.C. had planned to move to
a new 80-acre (320,000 m2) site located on Clarksville Road in West Windsor Township, but funding ran out.[3]

The percentages of Jewish representation among the
professions in 1915 dramatically shows an underrepresentation of Jews
proportional their population:
Physicians - 6.3%
Accountants - O%
Lawyers - 1.2%
Clearly, such a low figure bespeaks the lack of education
of the immigrants whose sons were obtaining the education they missed.
