I was relieved that I did not live in Jew Town. As a child, my home was on the top of the Market Street hill, just above Jew Town in Trenton, New Jersey during the 1930’s and ‘40’s. We lived above and behind my parents’ wallpaper store. The boundary between Jew Town and the rest of the city was the four corners where Broad St. crossed Market St. A large bank, the county courthouse, a red brick church, and Stover’s anti-Semitic drug store occupied the corners. As Market St. descended, the character of the hill changed, from a quiet lower middle class community to a bustling noisy market place.

I was often sent there by my mother on errands. Every Friday I bought horseradish for Shabbos. It was ground in front of me on an old wooden, not too clean, grater at Shulman’s store.

My name is Barry Rifkin. I was born in Trenton in 1940. I lived on Lamberton Street, Warren Street near Market and Rutherford Avenue. I graduated from Trenton HS in 1957.

I read the November 5, 2015  Blog post of the Trenton Jewish Historical Society and the name Allen Appelbaum was listed. My parents Ida and Sam Rifkin were good friends with Barney and Rose Appelbaum. Barney and Rose had two sons, Allen and Jerry. Do you know if Allen Appelbaum noted in your blog is the son of Barney and Rose Appelbaum? If so, could you pass on this email.

Hi, Art--Finally, I see the light at the end of the tunnel for my math book, which I am under contract to finish this month. Then I will complete the book on my Aunt Edith Goldberg's remembrances of Trenton of 80 years from the 1920s to when she left, about 10 years ago. Unfortunately, she died in December, so this will be printed posthumously, but it has lots of tidbits that ought to be interesting to long-time Trentonians. I haven't forgotten that I am sending it to you when finished.  Keep up the good work.  Sandy

Scott was not only a coach as was Dave Wiesberg they were mentors and friends you could rely on. Both taught me at THS, Dave was my coach in soccer, and Scotty from the YMHA with that "Skylight" basketball court. Learned much from these two great men.
